Asako Shiroki’s practice explores moments of contact between different worlds, when places, experiences and perspectives briefly meet without fully overlapping. Through sculpture, video and drawing, she examines how perception, memory and history shape our relationships with the world around us. The exhibition at Cowgirl Gallery refers to a perch: a temporary place of rest where separate worlds can draw close and touch.
Working with wood, plants, quartz sand and mirrors, Shiroki reflects on migration, belonging and movement between cultures. Time, change and chance are integral to her process, allowing relationships, distances and memories to take on temporary physical form.
Asako Shiroki (b. 1979, Tokyo) lives and works in Berlin and Tokyo. Her practice spans sculpture and installation, with a particular focus on wood. She approaches the natural variations and unpredictable qualities of her materials as the presence of an “other”, something with a perspective of its own.
